Carey R. Barber, M.D. Scholarship for Providers Depression Awareness and Suicide Prevention

Dear Faculty, Residents and Friends of Family Medicine

As many of you know, Dr. Carey Barber was a Family Medicine residency graduate of the Class of 2002 and a long-time faculty member who committed suicide in December 2012 after a long battle with depression.

Our Family Medicine department, in collaboration with Mrs. Carolyn Barber (Carey’s mother), will create the Carey R. Barber, M.D. Scholarship for Providers Depression Awareness and Suicide Prevention.

The fund has been set up in Carey’s name as a tribute to his many contributions to the department and the community and in an effort to bring help to others suffering from depression. It is also a way for those of us who cared about him to honor him.

The goal of the scholarship fund is to raise $30,000 from which an annual award of $1,000 will go to a medical student committed to Family Medicine and depression/suicide prevention.

Your donation is needed to make this happen. All donations are tax deductible.
